After completing his medical education, he started his residency in Orthopedics and Traumatology at Istanbul University Istanbul Faculty of Medicine in 2006 and completed it with his thesis titled “Surgical Treatment of Femoroacetabular Impingement Syndrome.” After completing his residency, he fulfilled his mandatory public service and continued his work in the fields of sports surgery and hip arthroscopy. Since 2013, he has continued his academic career at Istanbul University Istanbul Faculty of Medicine, Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology.
In 2015, he conducted studies in the field of sports surgery and hip arthroscopy at the Hospital for Special Surgery (New York, USA). He earned the title of Associate Professor in 2018. Dr. Gökhan Polat has written numerous book chapters on arthroscopic surgery and sports injuries and has published over 40 scientific articles in international scientific journals.

FAI, kalça eklemindeki kemik yapıların birbirine uyumsuzluğu sonucu oluşan bir rahatsızlıktır. Kalçada ağrı, hareket kısıtlılığı ve labrum yırtıklarına neden olabilir. İleri vakalarda kalça artroskopisi ile sorunun giderilmesi mümkündür.
PRP tedavisi, kişinin kendi kanından elde edilen trombositlerin kullanıldığı bir işlemdir ve daha çok yüzeyel dokuların iyileşmesi için tercih edilir. Kök hücre tedavisinde ise, yağ dokusu ya da kemik iliğinden elde edilen hücrelerle doku yenilenmesi daha derin ve etkili bir şekilde hedeflenir. Her iki yöntem de cerrahiye alternatif olarak uygulanabilir.
Kalça artroskopisi, kalça eklemi içinde kamera yardımıyla yapılan kapalı bir cerrahidir. Özellikle labrum yırtıkları, femoroasetabuler sıkışma (FAI) ve erken dönem kıkırdak hasarlarında etkili bir tedavi yöntemidir. Açık ameliyat gerektirmeden minimal invaziv bir şekilde uygulanır.
Ön çapraz bağ yırtıkları genç, aktif ve sporla ilgilenen bireylerde genellikle ameliyat gerektirir. Ancak yaş, aktivite düzeyi ve bağın yırtık derecesine göre bazı hastalarda fizik tedavi ve egzersizle de fonksiyonel bir iyileşme sağlanabilir. Kararı ortopedi uzmanı belirlemelidir.
Her menisküs yırtığı ameliyat gerektirmez. Özellikle küçük, damarlı bölgede yer alan ve stabil olan yırtıklar ilaç ve fizik tedaviyle iyileşebilir. Ancak yırtık büyükse ya da dizde kilitlenme gibi belirtiler varsa, artroskopik menisküs tamiri gerekebilir.
